Tiffin, Ohio – April 23, 2011 – The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of head coach Betsy Hada, split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Otterbein University today at Mayer Field. The Berg won game one 4-2 and lost 12-0 in five innings in the nightcap. Heidelberg goes to 22-12 overall and 4-10 in the OAC, while the Lady Cardinals move to 18-12 and 5-7.
With the game one win, Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen) earned her 13th victory of the season which breaks the single-season record in Heidelberg’s history. The milestone edges out Heather Dielber (12, 1996) and Dana Thoms (12, 2010) for first place.
Down 2-0, late in game one, Heidelberg came out swinging in the bottom of the fifth inning and poured on four runs off six hits to take the lead. Erica Huffman (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) started the charge with a lead-off single up the middle. Jami Wagner (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) and Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) followed with a base hit each.
With bases juiced, Lauren Childs (North Kingsville, Ohio / Ashtabula Edgewood) made it four-straight singles with a base hit to left field, scoring Huffman and putting Heidelberg on the board.
Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) drew a walk, bringing home Brumit which was followed by Lindsay Horwitz (Gurnee, Ill. / Warren Township) hitting a sacrifice fly scoring Wagner, earning the Berg a 3-2 lead. Adding insurance for Heidelberg was Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) who knocked in Childs off a single to center field.
After being outhit 12-2 in game one, Otterbein changed roles and outhit the Berg 12-3 in game two.
The Lady Cardinals scored two in the first inning, four in the second, one in the fourth and five in the fifth.
The Berg is back in action when it hosts John Carroll University on Wednesday (April 27) at 3:30 p.m. It will be played in conjunction with the Strike Out Cancer fundraiser.
