Tiffin, Ohio – May 12, 2011 – Continuing to add to her postseason accolades is junior first baseman Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) of the Heidelberg University softball team. On Monday Artino was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region Second Team. Artino is the first ’Berg player to earn all-region honors since 2001 when current head coach Betsy Hada was selected to the third team.
Artino’s all-region honor joins her selection to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference Second Team.
In her junior campaign, Artino led the Berg at the plate batting .447, to go along with a team-best 55 hits, 34 runs batted in and a .724 slugging percentage. She also shared the team lead with 13 doubles and seven home runs. Along the way she scored 27 runs.
This season Artino left her named inked across the Heidelberg single season record book. She set a new mark for hits, while tying the doubles record. Her seven home runs tied for third and her RBI total ranks fourth. Finally, Artino’s batting average is the fifth-best all-time and her 123 at bats ties for 10th.
