TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University softball team was recognized last week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for its academic performance. An Ohio Athletic Conference-best 10 Heidelberg student-athletes were named All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year to lead the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Berg stood 53rd among 111 teams honored with a team grade-point average of 3.310.
Included on the list were current senior infielder/catcher Bess Artino (Bellevue), junior outfielder Lauren Childs (North Kingsville/Ashtabula Edgewood), sophomore infielder/outfielder Alexa Crase Bucyrus/Colonel Crawford), sophomore infielder Erica Huffman (Strongsville), junior catcher/outfielder Caitlyn Klesta (Perry), junior infielder/outfielder Bridget Moran (Lakewood), junior infielder Carrie Moran (Lakewood), junior pitcher Ali Sayre (Sylvania/Northview), senior pitcher Dana Thoms (Amherst/Firelands) and sophomore outfielder Jami Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel).
The NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honor is based on the cumulative grade point average of the student-athlete for the entire academic year. To earn recognition, one must have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA during both semesters of the academic year.
