MARIETTA, Ohio – Heidelberg University softball lost both halves of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Marietta College on Saturday. The Pioneers won 5-2 and 10-7.
Heidelberg's Lisa Simmons (Westerville/North) blasted three doubles, but 'Berg pitchers allowed six home runs on the afternoon.
The Student Princes (10-16, 0-10 OAC) held a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning of the opener. Simmons ripped a two-run double that scored Lydia Stover (Norris City, IL/Norris City-Omaha-Enfield) and Jami Wagner (New Riegel).
Marietta answered with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The nightcap featured three home runs by Marietta clean-up hitter Trayla Liles.
The Pioneers scored six runs in the first three innings, but the Student Princes responded with a five-run fifth. In that inning, Heidelberg sent 11 batters to the plate. Simmons, Mikaela Mitsch (McHenry, IL) and Jessica Lieberth (Aurora) each had RBI hits while Stover and Bri Sinden (New Philadelphia) drew bases loaded walks.
Leading 6-5, Marietta scored twice in the bottom of the fifth.
Heidelberg fought back and scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-7. Simmons led off with a double, her third of the afternoon. She scored on an RBI single by Mitsch, who advanced to second on an errant throw. Pinch-runner Brittany Yost (Castalia/Margaretta) came around on a single by Kayla Zachrich (Defiance/Ayersville).
Marietta, though, added two insurance runs on the third home run by Liles.
Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday as they host Baldwin Wallace. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
