TIFFIN, Ohio - The Heidelberg volleyball team hosted the Wilmington Quakers and the Scots of Alma College for a tri-match before entering the thick of the Ohio Athletic Conference schedule. The Student Princes inched closer to .500 by adding a 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-10) victory against Wilmington and a 3-1 (25-6, 16-25, 25-9, 25-19) win over the Scots.
In their OAC opener against the Quakers, the Berg was led offensively by freshman Janessa Scott who had a game-high 12 kills for an attacked percentage of .579. Senior Amber Welfle was active offensively with eight kills of her own.
Senior Alexa Frank and freshman Karlie DiRuzza helped out the offensive attack with nine assists each against Wilmington. Frank also had six digs in the contest.
The Berg will head in to OAC competition 1-0 against conference opponents with the Pioneers of Marietta due up next on Saturday, October 5.
The Student Princes came out of their first match up and dominated the Scots in the first set, 25-6. The second game would go to the Scots but the Berg out scored Alma, 50-28 over the next two sets for the 3-1 victory.
Against the Scots, the Berg was led by another freshman, Sarah Parker who has been a force in her first year. Parker knocked through a game-high 14 kills followed by Welfle’s 13. Sophomore Jamie Kluding was also active against the Scots with nine kills of her own.
Amber was a key player defensively as well with a game-high 11 digs.
Junior Stephanie Romie and Alexa Frank were excellent against the Scots combining for 39 assists. Frank also collected eight digs against Alma.
In 2013, Welfle has amassed a team-high 221 kills thus far and boasts a team-high attack percentage of .304. Amber has accumulated 1,121 kills over her decorated career in the tricolor, which leaves her 47 kills out of sixth place all-time.
Alexa Frank now owns the sixth spot all-time in assists with 1,560 as she accounted for 32 of the Berg’s 82 assists on the day.
With their triumphs over Wilmington and Alma, the Berg ladies move to 7-9 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.
The Berg volleyball team and 14 year head coach Jason Miller will host the Beavers of Bluffton University on Tuesday, October 1. Action from inside Seiberling Gymnasium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
