Magers and Donelan Earn Academic Recognition

Tiffin, Ohio – November 5, 2009 – The Heidelberg University volleyball team had two voted to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV team. Senior Morgan Magers (Green Springs, Ohio / Old Fort) was named to the first team, while junior Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) earned second team accolades. With the nod on the first team, Magers is now placed on the ballot for ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors.

Heidelberg is a member of District IV which consists of Division II, III and NAIA schools located in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated for the all-district team the student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point and in at least their sophomore year at the institution and be a starter or key reserve. The all-district teams are voted on by sports information directors that are members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Magers is majoring in education intervention specialist. She carries a 3.97 grade point average and is currently managing her time on the court with student teaching. She is a four-year starting setter for the Berg and holds the career and single-season record for assists. This year she surpassed 5,000 assists, which marks the first to do so at the Berg and just the third player ever in the Ohio Athletic Conference.  Magers also ranks among the career leaders at the Berg in digs, service aces and sets played. A season ago she earned a spot on the first team as well for her academics and was tabbed an Honorable Mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

In 2009, Magers has controlled the offense and has dished out 1,232 assists, to go along with 27 service aces and 282 digs. She also has 79 kills and 21 blocks to her credit.

Donelan made an immediate impact in the back row and in the classroom when she came to campus three years ago. In the classroom, Donelan is studying business and sport management and carries a 3.95 gpa. It is her second all-district honor, having earning a spot on the first team a season ago and he is the reigning OAC Libero of the Year. A season ago she amassed 1,000 career digs and currently stands second with 1,834.

Donelan handles the Libero duties for the Berg leads the team with 609 digs, while serving up 27 service aces.

Heidelberg is in the midst of its 19th appearance in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament and is set to host the semifinals and championship Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7. The Berg won its second OAC Regular Season Title and earned the no. 1 seed in the tournament. The team is in search of its first OAC Tournament crown. For the year the team stands at 26-6. Heidelberg takes on no. 4 seeded Otterbein College tomorrow beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the OAC Semifinals in Seiberling Gymnasium.
