Marietta, Ohio – October 23, 2010 – Senior libero Brittany Donelan (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted) became the career digs leader at Heidelberg University in a sweep of Marietta College (25-8, 25-10, 25-21) in Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, Ohio.
The win improves its Ohio Athletic Conference record to 8-0 and secures Heidelberg at least a share of the 2010 regular season title. It is the third overall, including the second consecutive, time that the Berg has won the championship. Heidelberg previously won the championship in 1986 and 2009. Overall, Heidelberg, ranked 14th in the nation, is 26-3 and has won nine straight matches. The Pioneers fell to 8-18, 1-6.
Donelan finished the match with a team-high 12 digs to increase her career total to 2,479. She entered the contest needing just one dig to tie Megan Kempf’s (2003-09) career record of 2,468. Donelan also served up two aces in the win.
Offensively, sophomore middle hitter Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway) led the way with 14 kills. Backing Bevington was freshman Amber Welfle (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) with six kills.
Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel, Ohio / New Riegel) and Venessa Haase (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) each finished with five kills. Reinhart added six digs and three service aces, while Haase tallied 11 digs and one ace.
Sophomore setter Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) dished out a team-best 21 assists, to go along with nine digs and two service aces.
Next up for the Berg is its final OAC and home regular season match slated for Tuesday, Oct. 26. The Berg will host Ohio Northern University at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the first serve Heidelberg will recognize its two seniors, Donelan and Suzy Street (Grafton, Ohio / Midview).
