Volleyball Finishes 3-1 at ONU Invitational

After splitting the first two games of the Ohio Northern Invitational on Friday, Heidelberg volleyball won twice on Saturday. They swept the College of Wooster, 3-0 (25-15 , 25-22, 25-22) and defeated Carnegie Mellon, 3-1 (22-25, 25-10 , 25-14 , 25-9).  With the wins, the team finished their opening weekend of the 2012 season 3-1.

Against Wooster, junior Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) and senior Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) led the offensive attack with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.  Senior Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, MI) had 17 assists.  Defensively, sophomore Tessa Benanzer (Ft. Loramie) registered 16 digs.

After dropping the first set against Carnegie Mellon, the Student Princes roared back, taking the next three. Bevington, Welfle and senior Jacki Street (Grafton/Midview) each had 13 kills.  Ferguson and junior Alexa Frank (Tiffin/Calvert) were in double-digits for assists, with 21 and 11.

“It was good to battle back today,” said head coach Jason Miller. “The loss (to Trine on Friday) helped us refocus our strategies, both defensively and offensively.”

For their efforts over the weekend, Bevington and Street were named to the All-Tournament team.

The volleyball team is back on the court next weekend with four matches at the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational in Cincinnati, hosted by Mt. St. Joseph College.
