In the final two matches at the Charlie Wrublewski tournament in Cincinnati, head coach Jason Miller saw something in his volleyball team that had been missing in 2012.
Fight.
Heidelberg volleyball, led by senior Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway), swept Maryville (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) and host Mount St. Joseph (25-22, 26-24, 25-15) en route to a 4-0 finish on the weekend.
“We played well,” said Miller. “For the first time, I could see that fight, that feistiness. That’s how Heidelberg volleyball is played.”
Bevington led Heidelberg in kills in both matches, with 15 and 13. Junior Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) notched 9 kills against Maryville and senior Jacki Street (Grafton/Midview) had 8 against Mount St. Joseph.
Senior setter Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, MI) had 22 sets in the first match and 15 in the second. She was supported by Alexa Frank (Tiffin/Calvert) who added 21 sets on the day.
Defensively, sophomore libero Tessa Benanzer (Fort Loramie) hit double digits in digs both games, with 11 and 18.
“We’re still developing,” said Miller. “We just have to keep our intensity up.”
Heidelberg volleyball travels to Defiance on Tuesday, September 11 to take on the Yellow Jackets. The game will be played at Defiance High School, starting at 7 p.m.
