'Berg Volleyball Falls to Ranked Opponents at Wid Guisler Invitational

HUNTINGDON, PA -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team dropped three matches at the Wid Guisler Invitational, hosted by Juniata College.  All three opponents were ranked in the AVCA Top-25. 

On Friday, #23 Eastern won 3-1, 25-21 30-28, 15-25, 25-21.   Junior Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) led the offensive attack with 17 kills.  Senior Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) added 13 kills.  Senior Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, MI) had 36 assists in the losing effort.  

Defensively, three Student Princes reached double-digits in digs.  Sophomore Tessa Benanzer (Ft. Loramie) led with 21, followed by senior Jacki Street (Grafton/Midview) and Ferguson with 15 and 11, respectively. 

In the first match on Saturday, host #21 Juniata knocked off The Berg 3-0, 25-17 25-18 25-19.  As a team, Heidelberg only managed a .134 attack percentage.  For the first time this season, no Heidelberg player reached double-digits in kills. 

Juniata attacked at a .319 clip. 

To wrap up the weekend trip, Heidelberg (16-11) fell to #6 Emory 3-1, 25-19 25-18 28-30 25-15.  The loss was the fifth straight for Heidelberg, their longest losing streak since 2006.

Bevington had a team-high 15 kills for Heidelberg, while Welfle added 11.  Sophomore Stephanie Romie (Anna) had a career high 18 assists. 

Nine Student Princes recorded a dig, led by Benanzer with 18. 

With 37 kills on the weekend, Bevington was named to the All-Tournament team and eclipsed the 1,300 dig plateau.  She is only the second player in Heidelberg history to accomplish the feat.  Street sits at 999 career kills. 

Heidelberg returns to Seiberling Gymnasium on Tuesday for Senior Night.  The first serve against John Carroll will be at 7 p.m.
