CLEVELAND – Amber Welfle had 21 kills to help lead Heidelberg University volleyball over host Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday. The 3-2 (19-25, 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15) win for Heidelberg snapped an eight-game losing streak.
“We are a young team learning how to win all over again,” said 14-year head coach Jason Miller. “Wins like this one can only help our cause.”
After falling in the first set, Heidelberg (3-8) roared back with a dominant second set.
With the third set tied at 23, a Welfle kill and a Case attack error gave the set to the Student Princes and shifted the balance of the match.
Undaunted, Case (7-6) would use a six-point streak to take control of the fourth set.
Trailing 12-10 in the fifth set, Miller took a timeout. The Student Princes responded by taking the next three points. Case survived two match points before back-to-back kills by Stephanie Romie and Welfle sealed the Spartans’ fate.
Sarah Parker had 13 kills and Jamie Kluding had 11 in the offensive effort for Heidelberg. Alexa Frank had 25 assists and Romie had 20.
Defensively, Jubilee Haase had 26 digs and Kluding had 10. Parker had 11 blocks and Sarah Botts had seven.
“I’m proud of the fight the girls showed tonight,” said Miller.
Heidelberg volleyball returns to action on Saturday at a tri-match in Springfield. Heidelberg will face Wooster at 3 p.m. and Wittenberg at 5 p.m.
