CINCINNATI—The No. 11 Heidelberg University volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match to start the season tonight by defeating Thomas More (Ky). College, 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-18), at the Charlie Wrublewski Tournament hosted by The College of Mount St. Joseph at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati.
The win was the Berg’s fifth sweep in six matches and improves it to 6-0. Thomas More is now 1-4.
Senior second-team All-OAC outside hitter Venessa Haase (Miamisburg) led the way with another all-around game, recording eight kills, a team-high nine digs and two service aces.
Offensively, junior second-team All-OAC middle hitter Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) and sophomore middle hitter Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) tied for a team-high 12 kills. Bevington added four blocks, including one solo.
Senior reigning Ohio Athletic Conference player of the year Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel) tallied nine kills and junior setter Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and sophomore setter Alexa Frank (Tiffin/Calvert) notched 21 assists and nine assists, respectively.
The Berg continues play at the Charlie Wrublewski Tournament tomorrow when it faces Wittenberg University at 12:30 p.m. and Mount St. Joseph at 5:30 p.m.
