It was a historic afternoon in Seiberling Gymnasium as junior Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary’s) became the 13th women’s basketball player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career points mark, in a 75-62 loss to Otterbein University.
Phillips remains 13th on the all-time scoring list but now sits only 11-points behind 1984 graduate Diedre Stauffer’s 1,014-points. Phillips finished with 22-points against the Cardinals.
Over her career, Kathleen has amassed 358 field goals, averaging .372 over the past two and a half seasons. Phillips has shot .325 from beyond the arch, while knocking down 198 of her 240 free throw attempts.
She is averaging 16.4 points per game thus far in her career.
For the season, Phillips has knocked down 104 of her 264 field goal attempts for an average of .394. She has bucketed an impressive 34 of her 38 free throws and accumulated 268-points with ten contests left in the 2012-2013 season.
“It’s an achievement that she deserves,” said fifth year head coach Marcie Alberts. “She is a good kid and a hard worker. She may not be a vocal leader on the floor, but she leads the team by example and sometimes that can be just as important.”
Sophomore guard Paige Ricketts (Mineral City/Tusky Vally) finished behind Phillips offensively with 16-points in the loss but led the team in rebounds, with five, assists with four and steals with four.
Off of the bench, freshman Erin Pacholski (Medina) led the Student Princes shooting three for three from the floor, two of which were three-pointers.
Heidelberg gained an early lead, 35-seconds into the game with a three-pointer by Emily Giel (Burton/Berkshire).
But the Cardinals quickly stole the lead back from the Berg and steered the remainder of the game in their favor, leading by as much as 17 late in the game.
The Heidelberg lady roundballers now sit at 5-10 overall with a 1-7 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team will return to the court on Wednesday, January 16, when they travel to Berea, Ohio to take on the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
