Tiffin, Ohio – January 23, 2010 –The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team suffered a hard fought 48-46 setback to Mount Union College in an Ohio Athletic Conference match up. The loss drops Heidelberg to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders improve to 15-2 and are 8-2 against league foes.
Mount Union came out of the gates fast and had an early 13-6 lead when Tessa Pohovey found Rosa Lamattina for a three-pointer.
The Berg would battle back and would go on a 9-2 run and would knot things up at 15-15 when senior forward Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) split a pair of free-throws.
On the ensuing possession, Heidelberg would take a 18-15 lead when Richard found senior guard Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) behind the arch for a three-point field goal.
The Purple Raiders would go an 8-0 run and would lead 23-18 when Latmattina dished it out to Kori Wiedt for a long range three.
Mount Union would go into halftime with a 26-20 lead.
In the second half, Mount Union would go up as much as 13 with a 40-27 lead with 10 minutes left in the contest.
However, with six minutes remaining, the Berg would continue to battle and would go on a 13-1 run and would be down 41-40 when junior Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) made a pair of free throws.
Heidelberg would miss out on an opportunity to win the game with a three-pointer with five seconds remaining, which resulted in a Mount Union 48-46 victory.
For Heidelberg, Richard led with a double-double of 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Backing Richard was Barker who finished with 10 points and a team-high three assists.
Miller contributed with eight points and seven boards, while Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) scored six points and had four rebounds.
Heidelberg will look to get back in the win column when its travels to Otterbein College, Wednesday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m.
