University Heights, Ohio – February 17, 2010 – With one second remaining on the game clock and the score knotted up 64-64, freshman Jordan Ickes (Wooster, Ohio / Triway) made a clinch layup to give the Heidelberg University women’s basketball team a 66-64 victory over host John Carroll University.
The win improves the Berg’s record to 6-18 overall and 5-12 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks drops to 11-12 and are 8-9 against league foes.
John Carroll held a commanding 16-4 lead in the middle of the first half. However, the Berg would go on a 15-3 tear and would tie it 19-19 when sophomore Chelsey Calhoun (Ashland, Ohio / Black River) drilled a short range jumper.
At intermission the Berg would have a 29-24 advantage.
Heidelberg would pick up where they left off in the second half. With seven minutes in, the Berg would go up 41-31 when senior Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) found Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) for a three-pointer.
The Blue Streaks would continue to battle and would take a 48-46 lead with 9:30 minutes remaining in regulation.
With 14 seconds remaining, the Berg would have a 64-62 lead, however John Carroll would be fouled on its next possession and would make both free throws to tie it.
On the ensuing possession, with five seconds remaining, Barker found Ickes for a layup as time expired.
For Heidelberg, junior Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) led with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. Following Miller was Calhoun and Ickes. Both had career days with careers-high of 11 and 10 points, respectively. Calhoun also racked in a career-high six rebounds.
Along with the key pass of the winning bucket, Barker also scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds. Senior Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) scored five points, while sophomore Lyndsey DaVault (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) had four points and four rebounds.
Leading the way the defensive side of the ball was Shrider with game-highs 12 rebounds and two block shots. Shrider also scored eight points.
Heidelberg finishes its regular season game when it visits Muskingum University, Saturday, February 20 at 3:00 p.m.
