St. Louis, Mo. –November 20, 2009 – Junior forward Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) finished with a double-double and was one of four players in double figures but it was not enough as the Heidelberg University women’s basketball team suffered a 79-63 setback at Fontbonne University in the season opener for both institutions.
Lyndsey DaVault (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) had a jumper off the tip as the Berg scored the first four points of the game. DaVault added two free throws to put the Berg on top 6-4 at the 18:34 mark of the first period, but Fontbonne responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Fontbonne extended its first half lead to as many as 15 before heading into the locker room holding a 44-30 advantage.
Fontbonne pushed its lead to 18, 53-35, at the 17:08 mark of the second half, but Heidelberg’s Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) answered with a trey followed by a jumper by Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) to cut Heidelberg’s deficit to 13, 53-30, with just over 15 minutes to play.
A Richard jumper with 11:09 to play in the game ignited a 9-0 Heidelberg run to pull the Berg within six, 59-53, but that would be as close as Heidelberg could get.
Miller finished the night with 17 points and 11 rebounds followed by Richard with 16 points. DaVault registered a career-best 11 points followed by Shrider with a career-high 10 points and a career-best eight rebounds.
Fontbonne was led by a Mallory Ludwig’s 21 points and seven rebounds, along with 15 points from Calli Collier.
