Mount Vernon, Iowa – November 28, 2009 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team continued its early season road trip at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa today, November 28, and suffered a 69-56 setback. The loss drops the Berg to 0-3 on the year, while Cornell improves to 3-3.
After six ties and four lead changes to open the game Cornell took control, 15-13, midway through the opening half. Cornell extended its lead to as many as 17, 37-30, and held a 37-22 advantage at the intermission.
A 10-0 run in the second half pulled the Berg within single-digits at 50-44 with 8:29 left in the contest. Cornell pushed its lead back to double-digits, but the Berg responded once again and cut its deficit to six following a Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) trey with just over five minutes remaining, but that would be as close as the Berg could get. Cornell’s advantage was single-digits, 65-56, with less than a minute in the game, but Heidelberg was forced to foul, pushing the final score to 69-56.
For the game, Heidelberg shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field compared to 48.0 percent (24-of-50) by Cornell. Cornell held a slim 37-34 advantage on the glass, but the Berg controlled the offensive end, out rebounding its host 11-7.
Senior Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) tied her career-highs of 10 points and eight rebounds, to go along with three blocks to lead the way for the Berg.
Joining Shrider in double figures was junior Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) with a team-best 11 points followed by senior Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) with 10. Barker hauled in six rebounds, while junior Kristen McConkey (New Carlisle, Ohio / Tecumseh) had a career-best five rebounds and seven points. Barker added eight points and six assists.
