Late Shooting Slump Halts 'Berg

Rock Island, Ill. – November 29, 2009 – Augustana University utilized an 18-3 run over the final 9:44 of the game to top Heidelberg University in a non-conference women’s basketball contest at the Carver Physical Education Center in Rock Island, Ill. today, November 29. The loss drops Heidelberg to 0-4 on the year and Augustana improves to 3-2.

Heidelberg took its first lead of the game on its first possession of the second half. Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) opened the half with a jumper to give the Berg a 34-33 advantage. The Berg and Augustana battled through five lead changes and two ties before Heidelberg built its largest lead, 13 points, 58-45, following a Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) jumper with 9:44 to play in the game.

Augustana went on to close out the game with an 18-3 run to post the win. Heidelberg’s lone points came courtesy of a Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) trey at the 4:17 mark.

In the first half, Augustana led by as many as 11 points. Heidelberg pulled within one, 33-32, as time ran out in the opening period.

For the game, Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) led the way with a game-high 16 points, to go along with eight rebounds. Shrider recorded a career-best 12 points and tied her career-high of eight rebounds. Lyndsey DaVault (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) came off the bench and registered 11 points, including nine points from long range. Barker followed DaVault’s lead from long range, finishing with nine points, courtesy of three shots from behind the arc.

Augustana was led by Kristin Warnken with 15 points, while Lani Kasten hauled in 10 rebounds.
