Heidelberg Falls to ONU in Road Game

Ada, Ohio – December 5, 2009 – The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team traveled to Ada, Ohio, this afternoon for their first Ohio Athletic Conference road game taking on the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The Berg came up short, 67-57, falling to 1-5 overall, 1-1 in OAC, while Ohio Northern moves to 3-2 overall, 1-0.

The first half led to a back and forth battle as both teams struggled to control the lead. Heidelberg kept up with the pace from the beginning as Alyssa Esposito (Brecksville, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights) connected on a three-pointer to take the lead 3-2.

Followed by a 30 sec. timeout, Heidelberg held the lead 27-25 with 27 seconds left on the clock, but the Polar Bears would throw up a three-point shot with seven seconds to go reversing the lead just before halftime, 28-27.

The Berg’s Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) would start the second half off with a free throw to tie things up just after the clock started ticking away.

Heidelberg tied the score twice in the second half but was unable to take the lead. The Berg rallied to keep up with the Polar Bears throughout the second half and were able to pull within five points with just two minutes left.  A jumper by Shrider would end the scoring for the women

On the game, Shrider recorded her first career double-double after scoring a career-high 13 points and picking up 10 rebounds. Right behind her in scoring was Lyndsey DaVault (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) registering 12 points. Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) also, contributed to both defense and offense with eight points and 10 rebounds. 

The Berg will return to play Dec. 12 when they host OAC opponent Marietta College at 1:00 p.m.
