Ada, Ohio – February 9, 2011 – Despite only turning the ball over a season-best eight times, the Heidelberg University women’s basketball team fell to Ohio Northern University, 74-68. The Berg goes to 1-21 overall and 0-15 in the OAC, while the Polar Bears improve to 15-7 and 10-5 in league play.
Heidelberg relentlessly battled ONU for 40 minutes.
In the first half, the Berg took its first lead with 4:35 left before intermission, when freshman Emily Giel (Burton, Ohio / Burkshire) scored from long range, giving Heidelberg a 26-24 lead.
After a total of six lead changes, ONU held a slim 32-31 lead at half.
The Polar Bears had a commanding 51-40 lead at the 11:36 mark. However, Heidelberg countered with a 14-5 run, which was topped off by Giel draining another three-pointer bringing Heidelberg within two points with the score 56-54. That would be the closest the Berg would be for the rest of the contest.
Freshman Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky, Ohio / Saint Mary’s) led three in double figures for Heidelberg with 17 points. Giel followed with 16 points, while senior Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) added 11.
Leading on the boards was senior Kristen McConkey (New Carlisle, Ohio / Tecumseh) with six boards to go along with seven points.
Also contributing was senior Carrie Serrano (Cleveland, Ohio / Rhodes) and sophomore Casey Bishop (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) with six and five points, respectively.
Rounding out the scorers for the Berg were sophomores Jordan Ickes (Wooster, Ohio / Triway) and Chelsey Calhoun (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) who added four and two points, respectively.
