TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University women’s basketball team will play its third of four straight home games Saturday, Jan. 14 when it hosts No. 12 University of Mount Union (D3hoops.com) at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The Berg will be looking for its second home win in three tries.

The Berg (4-10, 1-6 OAC) is coming off a 90-56 loss to Otterbein University on Wednesday. Freshmen guards Erika Jordan (Bellevue) and Paige Ricketts (Mineral City/Tusky Valley) came off the bench to score season highs of 14 points and 11 points, respectively. Jordan was five-of-10 shooting, including four-of-nine from behind the arc, while Ricketts added four rebounds, two assists and five steals.
Heidelberg is led in scoring by sophomore guard and reigning OAC player of the week Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary’s), who averages an OAC-leading 19.1 points per game. Phillips also tallies 3.7 rebounds per game and shoots 37.5 percent (84-of-224) from the field and 81.7 percent (67-of-82) from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) scores 8.1 ppg. and leads the team with 4.3 rpg. The Berg averages 61.1 ppg. and 35.8 rpg. as a team and shoots 33.6 percent from the field.
Mount Union (13-1, 6-1 OAC) has won eight straight games, including a 53-45 triumph over Baldwin-Wallace College on Wednesday, and sits in first place atop the league standings. Rosa LaMattina tallied a game-high 16 points and Amanda Rose pulled down a team-high five rebounds against the Yellow Jackets.
LaMattina guides the Purple Raiders, ranking second in the league with 15.9 ppg. and a 52.8 (84-of-159) field goal percentage, first with 48 steals, and third with 55 assists and a 39.7 (31-of-78) three point field goal percentage. Kori Wiedt stands sixth with 13.7 ppg. and second in the OAC with a 44.8 (39-of-87) three point field goal percentage. Mount Union leads the league in scoring (72.0 ppg.), defense (55.2 ppg.), shooting (43.6 percent), three point shooting (36.4 percent) and turnover margin (plus-7.62 per game).
The Purple Raiders have won nine straight match-ups in the series, including a 74-46 win in Tiffin (Jan. 15, 2011) and an 86-57 win in Alliance (Feb. 19, 2011) last season. A year ago, Phillips averaged 16.5 ppg. against Mount Union, while LaMattina tallied 12.5 ppg.
Following Saturday’s game, Heidelberg will host Capital University on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
