BEXLEY, Ohio—Sophomore guard Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary’s) poured in a game-high 21 points, but the Heidelberg University women’s basketball team fell to Capital University, 64-50, today in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Capital Center in Bexley, Ohio. The loss was the eight straight for the Berg.
In addition to Phillips for Heidelberg (4-16, 1-13 OAC), sophomore guard Emily Giel (Burton/Burkshire) scored nine points and sophomore guard Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) chipped in four points and a team-high six rebounds.
Capital (14-7, 9-5 OAC) was led by Shalena Hawkins, who tallied game-highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds. Rebekah Will also scored 17 points and Stacy Timmerman added 12.
Both teams reached four ties over the first six minutes of the game before Capital jumped out to a 15-8 lead when Jamie Caton made one of two free throws at the 11:26 mark.
Freshman guard Paige Ricketts (Mineral City/Tusky Valley) made a lay-up and Phillips canned a three-pointer at 10:37 to lead the Berg on a 5-0 run and cut the lead to 15-13.
Capital regained a seven-point lead and entered halftime with a 25-18 advantage following a fast break lay-up from Hawkins with just under two minutes to play in the opening half.
The Crusaders outscored the Tri-Color by a 10-4 margin to open the second half a took a 35-22 lead—its largest of the game—at the 15:19 mark when Timmerman made a lay-up.
Heidelberg led a 15-8 jaunt of its own and closed to within 43-37 by the 8:19 mark when junior guard Jordan Ickes (Wooster/Triway) grabbed her own rebound and made a follow-up lay-up.
Capital scored four straight points and regained a double-digit lead following another lay-up by Hawkins with 7:13 to play. The Crusaders increased their led to 12 moments later and would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
The Berg shot 30.4 (17-of-56) percent from the field and 93.3 (14-of-15) percent from the charity stripe.
Capital was 33.3 (20-of-60) from the field and 71.9 (23-of-32) from the line and held a 51-30 rebounding advantage.
Heidelberg returns to the hardwood Wednesday, Feb. 8 when it hosts Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m. in its final home game of the season. Senior guard Jasmine Shaw (Columbus/Hamilton Township) will be honored prior to tip-off.
