ALLIANCE, Ohio - Heidelberg University's Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary) scored 29 points and Jordan Ickes (Wooster/Triway) scored a career-high 23 points in a 96-85 loss to Mount Union on Saturday.
Both teams shot well from beyond the arc. Mount Union (14-3, 8-2 OAC) was 19 for 34 (55.9%) for the game, led by Amanda Turner who connected on eight of her 13 attempts. Heidelberg (5-12, 1-9 OAC) was 14 for 23 (60.9%).
For the first five minutes of the contest, the game was closely contested. A layup from Ickes put Heidelberg up 10-8 with 15:27 to play in the half.
Later, freshman Allie Hawkins (Bucyrus) dropped a 3-pointer to halt a mini-run by Mount Union, who led 19-17 with 12:11 left in the first.
The Purple Raiders, ranked 21st in the D3hoops.com Top 25, closed out the last 12 minutes of the half on a 33-19 run , leading 52-36 at the break.
In the second half, Mount Union led by as many as 25 points before Heidelberg put together a run.
A combination of increased defensive intensity and timely scoring for Heidelberg, the Student Princes cut the Mount Union lead down to nine with less than a minute to play in the game. However, Heidelberg would run out of time.
Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. Emily Giel (Burton/Berkshire) added 11 points.
Turner finished with 26 for Mount Union. Her teammate Rosa LaMattina added 21 points.
Mount Union out-rebounded Heidelberg 40-32.
The Student Princes will look to snap a seven-game slide on Wednesday when they host Capital. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
