Women's Basketball Grinds Out a Win on Alumni Day

TIFFIN -- Teamwork makes the dream work.

That has been the mantra for Heidelberg University women's basketball this season.

And on Saturday, it worked.

The Student Princes used an all-around team effort to defeat Muskingum University 78-75.  The win snapped a 12-game losing streak for Heidelberg and keeps them in the postseason hunt.  Box Score  |  Season Stats  |  Game Notes

Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary) scored 24 points and Jordan Ickes (Wooster/Triway) had 19 to lead The Berg to victory on Alumni Day.

Neither team took command during the beginning of the game until Heidelberg (6-17, 2-14 OAC) went on an 8-0 run to take a 29-21 lead with 3:24 left in the half.  Muskingum (7-16, 2-14 OAC) would cut the lead to five by halftime.

After the break, the Muskies took control.  A layup by Hannah Nelson put Muskingum up 47-46 with 13:05 left.  It would be their final lead of the game.

Nicole Payne (Lewis Center/Olentangy), in her first career start, responded with a 3-pointer from the corner to get the lead back for Heidelberg.

Phillips, the leading scorer in the OAC, followed with two 3-pointers.

With just under 7:00 to play, a coast-to-coast layup by Ickes gave Heidelberg a 10-point lead, their largest of the contest.

The Muskies answered, though, and tied the game at 71 on a Nelson jumper with 1:41 to play.

The Berg retook the lead for good with another Ickes layup.

Last-minute free throws, including three from Megan Miller (Tiffin/Columbian) sealed the win for Heidelberg.

Miller finished with 15 points, nine of which came from the line.

The Student Princes turned the ball over 12 times, their fewest since turning it over 11 times in a win at Westminster earlier this season.

Seven Heidelberg players scored points, nine grabbed at least one rebound and eight recorded an assist in the victory.

Prior to the game, twenty former Heidelberg basketball players took to Sayger Court for the annual Alumni Game.

Heidelberg and Muskingum are deadlocked for the last OAC Tournament slot.  Muskingum finishes the season at home vs. Capital (13-9, 8-7 OAC) and at Baldwin Wallace (14-9, 9-7 OAC).  Heidelberg hosts BW on Wednesday and finishes at Otterbein (17-5, 11-4 OAC).

At halftime of Wednesday's game, Heidelberg will salute the Landess Award winners from the fall sports season.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
