Yellow Jackets Breeze by the Berg

The no. 17 Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets were just too much for the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team to handle, as they lost the Ohio Athletic Conference contest 84-59. The loss brings the Berg’s record down to 5-6 on the year, 1-4 in the OAC. Meanwhile, B-W rises to 11-1 overall, 4-1 in OAC action.

The first half began with B-W jumping out ahead to an impressive 24-8 lead. Heidelberg refused to surrender easily, however, and the team worked their way back, lessening the gap to a seven-point deficit with the score at 29-22. Senior Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) contributed eight points as the Berg fought its way back into the game. But the Yellow Jackets offensive refused to quit and worked back to a commanding lead before the buzzer. The team’s made their way to the locker rooms with B-W ahead 36-23.

Heidelberg never seemed to regain the momentum it had picked up half way through the first, and while the Tricolor’s offensive stumbled, B-W’s shooters shined. At the 15th minute mark, the Yellow Jackets had already pulled ahead even further to a 51-25 lead. Heidelberg’s biggest deficit of the night came at the seven-minute mark in the second half when the team trailed behind its OAC foe by 31 points, 70-39. Though they tried their best to work out of it, their just was not enough time and the Heidelberg women suffered their second-straight loss, first of the new year.

Offensively for the Berg, both Campbell and Maureen Hunter (Toledo, Ohio / Notre Dame) reached double-digit scoring for the night, with each posting 13 and 12 points respectively. Hunter also led the defense with two steals and five rebounds.

For B-W, Selena Eskinazi-Budge led the way with 15 points, while Ariel Brough contributed 12 and Amanda Schroeder sunk in 10. Defensively, Schroeder led with four rebounds and one steal.

Heidelberg returns to action Wednesday, January 2, against OAC opponent John Carroll in University Heights, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.
