Heidelberg Overtakes Crusaders

For the first time since January of 2003, the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team beat Capital University in Columbus, Ohio on the Crusaders home court. The Berg emerged victorious against their Ohio Athletic Conference foe by a score of 57-56.

With Capital coming into the game ranked third in the OAC and Heidelberg standing at fifth, the win is essential as Heidelberg strives for a postseason berth. After the loss, Capital falls to 10-4 on the year, 5-3 in OAC action, while Heidelberg stands at 8-6 for the season, 4-4 in conference play.

Late in the game, with Capital leading 49-44, the Berg quickly tied it up thanks to a fast-break lay-up from Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) and soon went ahead with another lay-up from Maureen Hunter (Toledo, Ohio / Notre Dame), 55-53. The Crusaders were not ready to roll over just yet, and retook the lead off a three-pointer from Katy Lafferty.

Jessica Jennette (LaRue, Ohio / Elgin) quickly tossed in a lay-up for Heidelberg to put them ahead 57-56. The score may have been too close for comfort for some ’Berg fans, but it was enough, especially as they watched Capital miss its last five shots of the game.

Leading the way for the Berg was Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial), who scored 12 points for her team, going 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Campbell, along with Hunter and Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview), all racked up six boards on the night as well.  Hunter led the team with five assists and four steals as well.

For Capital, Kristen Richardson sunk 13 points and grabbed two steals, while Caitlin Elsass led the Crusaders with a game-high seven rebounds.

Heidelberg suits up next to face off against Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
