Shooting Slump Halts Heidelberg
A second half scoring slump killed any hope for a win the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team may have had in the team’s Ohio Athletic Conference match up against Wilmington College. The Quakers walked off with a 68-51 victory, raising the team’s overall record to 13-4 overall, 7-3 in the conference. Heidelberg falls to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in OAC action.
The first half ended with Wilmington only ahead 30-29 and Heidelberg waging a balanced scoring attack with six points apiece from Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana), Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde), and Carrie Serrano (Cleveland, Ohio / Rhodes). However, when the Berg came out to play in the second, their shooting game was nowhere to be found.
After averaging 50 percent from the three-point line in the first, Heidelberg’s numbers dropped down to just 33 percent in the second. With 3:41 left in the game, Heidelberg made its last shot of the day when Miller hit a jumper from the paint. Wilmington would go onto sink in 11 unanswered points before the final buzzer.
Marianne McGoron led the Quakers with 23 points and three assists, while Kortney Kin grabbed eight boards and four steals. For Heidelberg, Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) dropped in 14 points and snagged two steals, with Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) reaching up for eight rebounds and three assists.
Heidelberg play again next Wednesday, January 30, at home against Ohio Northern. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
