Skolnicki Hits 1,000 Point Plateau versus B-W

Junior guard Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) of the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team joined an elite group of Heidelberg women’s basketball players tonight. Despite the Berg falling 79-61 against nationally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Skolnicki recorded her 1,000th career point.

Heading into the game, Skolnicki was 14 points shy of the milestone. With 2:13 on the clock she drove across the lane to the right side and was fouled in the act of shooting. Two free-throws gave Skolnicki her 999th and 1,000th career points. She is the 12th player in women’s basketball history to record 1,000 career points and is the second player this season to do so. Senior guard Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) accomplished the feat during opening weekend at Swarthmore College. Skolnicki finished the game with 14 points and now has 1,000th points.

The setback drops the Berg to 9-11 overall and 4-9 in the OAC, while Baldwin-Wallace improves to 18-2 overall and 11-2 in league action. The Yellow Jackets entered the contest ranked 16th by the WBCA and 19th in the nation by d3hoops.com.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 18:45 mark when Ariel Brough made two foul shots. Heidelberg then outscored B-W 5-2 to take its only lead of the first half at 5-4 with 17:11 left when Campbell made a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets then outscored the Student Princes 16-8 to build a seven-point lead for the fourth time in the game at 20-13 with 9:12.

B-W extended its lead to 16 points at 31-15 with 5:16 left before the intermission when Brough made a lay up. Heidelberg responded with a 6-0 run, but B-W bounced back to hold a 39-25 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Student Princes outscored B-W 9-4 to get within 10 points on two separate occasions with the last at 44-34 when sophomore forward Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) made two foul shots, but that would be as close as the Berg would get. B-W built its largest lead of the contest at 25 points at 72-47 with 3:53 left on the clock.

Joining Skolnicki in double figures for Heidelberg was Sarah Kesse (Cincinati, Ohio / Colerain) with a season-high 10 points. Skolnicki also led the way on the glass with eight rebounds, while dishing out five assists.

Heidelberg returns to action at Marietta College on Feb. 9. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
