Women's Basketball Victorious in Home Finale

The Heidelberg College women’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 71-59 victory over visiting Muskingum College today in Seiberling Gymnasium. The victory was a fitting way to bid farewell to three seniors that have been an integral part of the ’Berg program over the course of the last four years.

Playing in their final home contests of their careers was Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial), Maureen Hunter (Toledo, Ohio / Notre Dame) and Hollie Knott (Concord, Ohio / Riverside). Campbell finished the game with 15 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Knott added four points and a rebound and Hunter dished out two assists, to go along with a steal, a block and a rebound.

Aside from sending the seniors out with a home finale win, the Berg will head into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament riding a victory when it travels to No. 1 seed Baldwin-Wallace College on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. match up. For the season, Heidelberg stands at 11-14 overall and 6-12 in the OAC.

Heidelberg’s Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) and Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) joined forces to erase an early nine-point deficit, giving the Berg its first lead of the game at 18-17 with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Skolnicki opened and closed the run with jumpers, while Miller sank a three-pointer from the right wing and added a steal and a lay up.

The two teams battled back and forth with neither holding larger than a three-point advantage. Heidelberg held two three-point leads; including its 34-31 lead heading into the locker room following a Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) lay up as time ended in the first half.

Three early ties were featured in the second half, but Heidelberg would never relinquish its lead. With Heidelberg holding a 48-44 lead with 12:12 on the clock, Campbell connected with Skolnicki to start a 13-2 run to give the Berg its largest lead of the contest, 61-46, with 8:23 left to play in the game. Highlighting the second half run was a four-point play from Richard, who sank a three from the right corner and was fouled. On Heidelberg’s next possession, Jessica Jennette (LaRue, Ohio / Elgin) drove the left baseline and laid one off the glass and was fouled. Jennette stepped to the line and completed the old fashioned three-point play.

Muskingum pulled within six points, 63-57, on a Tiffany Youel lay up with 5:16 left in the game, but Miller responded with a lay up of her own to quiet the Muskies late threat.

Joining Campbell in double figures for Heidelberg was Skolnicki with a team-high 19 points, Richard with 16 points and Miller with 15, which ties her career-high. Miller also snagged a team-best nine rebounds, while picking up three steals and two assists.

Leading the way for Muskingum was Jessica McKenzie with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Youel added 18 points.
