Campbell Hits 1,000 in Heidelberg Victory

Senior guard Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) inked her way into the Heidelberg College women’s basketball record book today as she became the 11th player in the history of the program to tally 1,000 career points. Along the way, Heidelberg utilized a solid second half of play to top Eastern College 57-45 in the consolation round of the 10th annual Swat Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. The win improved Heidelberg to 1-1 on the year, while Eastern fell to 0-2.

Campbell entered the contest with 994 career points and reached the 1,000 point plateau on a free throw with 9:08 to play in the game. Campbell pocketed a steal on the defensive end of the court only to get fouled, setting up her 1,000 and eventual 1,001 points. For the game, Campbell finished with 13 points to bring her career total to 1,007, ranking her 11th all-time.

For the second-straight game, Heidelberg controlled the tip and scored a point from the charity stripe by Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing), but Eastern responded on its ensuing possession and went on to build a six-point advantage on two different occasions. The later advantage came with 5:11 to play in the opening half. The Berg battled back cutting its deficit to one three times, before Maureen Hunter (Toldeo, Ohio / Notre Dame) connected with Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) for a jumper with a second on the clock before the break to give Heidelberg a 21-20 lead. The Skolnicki jumper was the building of a lead that the Berg would never relinquish.

Heidelberg went on to outscore Eastern 36-25 in the second half on 12-of-26 shooting from the floor. Campbell hit a free throw to push Heidelberg’s lead to seven points, 27-20, just three minutes into the second period. Eastern eventually responded with an Emily Reese three-pointer to cut its deficit the three, but that would be as close as Heidelberg would let their opponent get. The Berg built a 12-point lead with 6:26 on the clock and cruised to the eventual 57-45 win.

Skolnicki led the way with a game-high 18 points, while Richard chipped in with nine. Freshman Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) finished with a team-high seven rebounds, to go along with eight points. Aside from her 13 points, Campbell hauled in five boards.

Heidelberg concludes a three-game road trip at Hiram College on Nov. 21 beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Berg opens its home schedule, along with its Ohio Athletic Conference slate, against Wilmington College Dec. 1. Tip-off with the Quakers is set for 3:00 p.m.
