Wilmington Triumphant Over 'Berg
It came down to the last second of the game before the Wilmington Quakers could finally declare victory over the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team, 62-60. Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) made a last second attempt at a three-pointer to tie the game for the Berg, but came up short in Heidelberg’s home-opener. Heidelberg falls to 2-2 on the year and 0-1 in the OAC, while Wilmington improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The Berg got off to rough start in the first half, letting Wilmington score four unanswered three-pointers. However, the ladies battled back, making three of their own from the arc. Heidelberg spent much of the first half fighting to stay in the game and, with just under seven minutes left, the Berg defense kicked up its game and held the Quakers at 28 while the offense posted 11 points for the tie. Half-time came with the OAC opponents tied at 30-30.
The second half proved to be a much different game, with Heidelberg keeping the score within four points for the majority of play. Right around the three-minute mark, with Heidelberg down 58-52, Campbell sank a jumper after being fouled by Wilmington’s Jackie Hauke. The resulting free throw was also good, bringing Heidelberg within three-points for the lead. Unfortunately, Wilmington’s offense answered back with two lay-ups of it own.
Campbell and Wilmington’s Kortney Kin led their team’s offense for the day, each recording 18 points. Campbell also shot 6-for-11 during the game, 5-for-7 from the three-point line. Maureen Hunter (Toledo, Ohio / Notre Dame) led the Berg’s defense with four blocks, while Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) found her way under the net for 10 rebounds. The Quaker’s Claire Brown posted two blocks of her own, while Kin and Katie Streck tied to lead their team with six rebounds apiece.
Also reaching double figures for Heidelberg was Hunter with 11 points, Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) with 12 and Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) with 10.
Heidelberg tips off next against Ohio Northern on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Ada, Ohio.
