Balanced Scoring Leads to OAC Win

With help from the aggressive play of Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde), the Heidelberg College women’s basketball team jumped out to an early 12-7 lead against Marietta College. Miller netted six of the Berg’s 12 points in the first seven minutes play. The team’s scoring remained consistent throughout the game, contributing greatly to the Berg’s 73-54 defeat of the Pioneers.

It is the fifth time in the last three years that Heidelberg has come out on top against Marietta. With the win, Heidelberg rises to 3-4 on the year, 1-3 in the OAC. Marietta falls to 2-7 and remains winless against its OAC opponents.

Heidelberg held the lead for the majority of the first half, only falling behind Marietta once just under the eight-minute mark when the Pioneers pulled ahead 20-19. The Berg quickly regained momentum and took back the lead less than a minute later. As the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the half, the Tricolor sat atop the Pioneers 37-25.

The second part of the game saw Heidelberg posting big numbers, as five members of the squad ended the game having scored in the double-digits. Maureen Hunter (Toledo, Ohio / Notre Dame) may not have started the game for the team, but she finished it leading the way with 15 total points, an extra present for the baler who celebrates her 22nd birthday tomorrow. Other players who scored well for the Berg were Miller and Amanda Campbell (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) with 10 points apiece, and Brittany Skolnicki  (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) and Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) each tossing in 11.

Amanda Carraher and Jamie Beckett led the Pioneers in scoring, tossing in 20 and 15 points respectively.

Heidelberg faces off against Earlham next. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19.
