Strong Second Half Falls Victim to Early Deficit Against JCU

The Heidelberg women’s basketball team outscored visiting John Carroll University in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a double digit halftime deficit, and suffered an 82-68 setback to the Blue Streaks.
 
The win improves John Carroll to 8-4 on the year and 3-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Berg stands at 4-9 and 1-5.
 
John Carroll scored on its first two possessions to take an early 4-0 lead. The Berg battled back and knotted the game at 6-6 following a Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) jumper with 16:06 on the clock. The Blue Streaks answered on the ensuing possession and extended its lead to double digits, 26-16, eight minutes later and entered the locker room holding a 40-24 advantage.
 
In the second half, Heidelberg opened up with an 11-1 run, that was fueled by five points from Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana), to pull within six points, 41-35, with 16:19 left in the game. However, the Blue Streaks responded with an 11-2 run that pushed its lead back to 15, 52-37, and held on for the win.
 
For the game, Heidelberg connected on 24-of-64 shots (37.5 percent) from the field, while the Blue Streaks hit 27-of-62 (43.5 percent). John Carroll hit seven from long range compared to just three by the Berg. The Berg held a 46-40 advantage on the glass, highlighted by a commanding 21-14 difference on the offensive end of the court.
 
Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) paced four in double figures for Heidelberg with 17 points off the bench. Miller added 14 and a team-leading nine rebounds. Harrigan finished with 12, while Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) had 10 points and seven boards. Harrigan also hauled in six rebounds and Skolnicki chipped in with five.
 
JCU also had four in double figures led by Caitlin Sureck and Rachael Price with 17 each. Sureck also led the way with nine rebounds.
