Skolnicki Sees Double, but 'Berg Falls at Otterbein
Senior guard Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) picked up her first double-double of the season, finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Heidelberg women’s basketball team suffered a hard fought 72-66 setback at Otterbein College today, January 10, in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
Heidelberg stands at 4-10 overall and 1-6 in the OAC following the contest, while Otterbein improves to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in league action.
Skolnicki connected on 9-of-21 shots from the field and added eight points from the free throw line. She also dished out three assists and had a block.
Backing Skolnicki was Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) with 11 points and two steals. Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) added nine points and four rebounds, while Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) came off the bench to finish with 10 rebounds and nine points.
Leading the way for Otterbein was Laura Roth with 22 points and 10 assists followed by Katy Miller with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Otterbein scored first in the game and built a double-digit lead, 26-15, with less than 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Heidelberg battled back and used a 7-0 run to close out the half to pull within one at the break, 40-39.
Skolnicki gave the Berg its first lead of the game with a jumper out of the gates in the second half, but its lead was short lived as Otterbein’s Roth answered with a trey. Richard gave the lead back to the Berg with a lay up with 14:47 on the clock, but once again the Cardinals answered with a bucket and extended its lead to 12 points, 68-56, with 4:48 to play in the game.
At the 2:15 mark Skolnicki hit a jumper to cut Heidelberg’s deficit to four points, 68-64, but the Berg did not make a field goal the rest of the game and suffered the OAC setback, 72-66.
For the game, Otterbein shot 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the field, while the Berg hit 20-of-73 shots for a 27.4 clip. Otterbein held a slim 44-41 advantage on the glass. The Berg defense ruffled the Cardinals feathers, forcing 23 turnovers.
