Yellow Jackets Sting 'Berg in Berea
Heidelberg University senior guard Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) scored a game-high 23 points, but it was not enough as host Baldwin-Wallace College posted a 74-60 win in Ohio Athletic Conference women’s basketball action in Ursprung Gymnasium.
The win improved Baldwin-Wallace to 15-5 overall and 10-3 in the OAC, while the Berg stands at 5-15 and 2-11.
Skolnicki hit 11 of her 18 attempts from the floor en route to scoring honors. Coming off the bench to hit three from long range for the Berg was freshman Lyndsey DaVault (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville). Skolnicki and Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) each grabbed a team-leading five boards. Harrigan finished with three points, but dished out seven assists.
B-W was paced by Amanda Schroeder and Rachael Quiring’s 14 and 13 points, respectively. Ariel Brough grabbed a game-high nine boards.
On the night, Heidelberg outshot the host Yellow Jackets 49.1 percent (26-for-53) compared to 46.7 percent (28-of-60). On the glass, Baldwin-Wallace held a 33-28 advantage.
In the first half, Heidelberg jumped out to an 11-6 lead at 14:47 following three straight baskets from Skolnicki. B-W cut its deficit to one on three separate occasions before the Berg built a 23-19 lead with 8:42 left in the period following a Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) trey. The Yellow Jackets rallied with a 12-0 run to take an eight point lead, 31-23, with 5:04 remaining before the break. The B-W lead grew to 10, 37-27, with 2:05 left on the first half clock, but the Berg was able to end the half on a 5-2 run to bring the score to 39-32 at the break.
In the second half, B-W’s lead grew to nine points, at 46-37, following a Courtney Ritzler jumper at the 16:14 mark. Heidelberg kept it close with a hot shooting hand and cut the Jacket lead to three, at 52-49, with 8:42 remaining courtesy of a DaVault three, but could not get any closer.
