'Berg Wins at Marietta

Four players scored in double figures to lead the Heidelberg University women’s basketball team to a 70-67 win at Marietta College today in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest. The win improves the Berg to 6-15 overall and 3-11 versus league foes, while Marietta stands at 2-19 and 0-14.
 
Heidelberg trailed 7-6 early in the contest, but scored nine-straight points, including four from Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde), to take an eight-point lead, 15-7 with 10:56 on the clock. The Berg controlled the scoreboard until the 5:50 mark when Marietta’s Rachel Jones had a layup that ignited a 10- run and swung a five-point advantage from the Berg to a five-point lead, 29-24, for the host Pioneers with 3:12 left in the opening half. Heidelberg’s Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) tied the game at 30-30 with two free throws, but Marietta closed the half with an old fashioned three-point play to hold a 33-30 lead at halftime.
 
Marietta extended its lead to double-digits, 46-36, at the 15:24 mark of the second half. Miller and Skolnicki combined to score Heidelberg’s next 11 points to cut Heidelberg’s deficit to one, 49-47, and Betsy Shrider (Mount Blanchard, Ohio / Riverdale) scored in the paint to knot the game at 49-49 with 9:37 on the clock. Following Shrider’s basket, Skolnicki pocketed a steal and went the length of the court for a score and the lead.
 
Heidelberg overcame two ties and went on to stretch its lead to as many as seven, 65-58, with 59 seconds left in the game. Marietta threatened down the stretch, but the Berg held on for the 70-67 win.
 
Skolnicki led the way for the Berg with 18 points followed by Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) and Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) with 14 points apiece and Miller with 11. Miller led the way on the glass with eight boards, while Barker and Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) finished with seven apiece. Harrigan also dished out six assists in the win.
 
Amanda Carraher led Marietta with 21 points and Lizz Wilson hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds.
