Solid Second Half Produces Home Court Win
A solid second half effort led to a 74-65 Heidelberg College women’s basketball win over Oberlin College tonight, Dec. 1, in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg. Tonight’s contest was the home opener for the Berg following four-straight road games. The Berg improves to 2-3 on the year, while Oberlin drops to 0-5.

Oberlin scored first and led the entire first half. A trey from Carrie Serrano (Cleveland, Ohio / Rhoades) and a jumper in the lane by Ashley Hawley (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) knotted the game at 26-26, Oberlin’s January Baker hit a jumper as time was expiring in the opening half to keep Oberlin on top, 28-26.
Four-straight points by Sarah Kesse (Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain) to open the second half gave the Berg its first lead of the game, 30-28. Kesse extended the lead to 10, 40-30, following two free throws with 15:02 on the clock. Oberlin pulled within two points on a Alyssa Clark three-pointer, but Heidelberg’s Stacey Richard (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) answered with a three-ball of her own on the ensuing possession to swing the game’s momentum back in favor of the Berg, along with a 65-60 lead with just under two minutes to play.
For the game, Heidelberg shot 31.9 percent (22-of-69) from the field, while Oberlin connected on 22-of-67 attempts for a 32.8 clip. Heidelberg controlled the glass, 55-43, including a 20-12 margin on the offensive boards.

Leading two players in double figures for the Berg was Jenny Miller (Tiffin, Ohio / Clyde) with a career-high 17 points. Miller reached double-figures for the third-straight outing and also hauled in a team-leading nine rebounds. Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) finished with 13 points, a career-best seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Richard added nine points, while Kesse, Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) and Lyndsey DaVault (Orrville, Ohio / Orrville) contributed eight points apiece. DaVault connected on two from long range to lead to a career night for the freshman.
Oberlin was led by Alyssa Clark’s game-high 28 points, while Baker grabbed a game-leading 10 boards.
Heidelberg’s home stand is short lived as it takes to the road for its Ohio Athletic Conference opener Saturday, Dec. 6 at Wilmington College. Tip-off with the Quakers is 3:00 p.m.
