Second Half Shooting Slump Proves Costly vs. ONU
The Heidelberg College women’s basketball team suffered a 64-41 setback to Ohio Northern University tonight, December 10. The Ohio Athletic Conference contest took place in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg. The win evens the Polar Bears record to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, while the Berg stands at 2-5 and 0-2.
Heidelberg trailed 26-24 at the half, but suffered through a 7:32 scoring drought early in the second half and faced a 45-29 deficit. Brittany Skolnicki (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) broke the scoring slump with a lay up with 11:28 on the clock, but the Berg would not get any closer.
For the game, Heidelberg shot 23.1 percent (15-of-65), including a 7-for-37 second half showing. ONU connected on 44.9 percent (22-for-49) from the field and built its large second half lead shooting 56.0 percent (14-of-35) from the floor. The Polar Bears held a 47-38 advantage on the glass, but the Berg led the way on the offensive end 14-10.
Leading the way for Heidelberg was Stacey Barker (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) with seven points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Ashley Hawley (Sullivan, Ohio / Black River) came off the bench to haul in a team-leading five rebounds, while adding four points and two blocks. Morgan Harrigan (Urbana, Ohio / Urbana) chipped in with seven points and Skolnicki and Sarah Kesse (Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain) added six apiece.
Kara Dysert led the way for Ohio Northern with a double-double including 13 points and 10 rebounds. Alisha Rinehart tallied a game-high 17 points.
Heidelberg returns to action at Mount Union College on Saturday, December 13. Tip-off with the Purple Raiders is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
