TIFFIN, Ohio—First-year head coach Ned Shuck made his home debut tonight, but the Heidelberg University wrestling team fell to Olivet (Mich.) College, 31-12, in its 2011-12 home opener at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Highlighting the match for the Student Princes (0-1) was junior 149-pounder Andrew Johnson (Weston/Ostego), who recorded the team’s lone pin.
Olivet (1-0) jumped out to a 13-0 lead after three bouts.
Johnson beat the second-period buzzer in the 149-pound bout and pinned Olivet’s Gage Pederson with one second remaining, cutting the Comet lead to 13-6.
Sophomore 157-pounder Justin Wharton (Oregon/Clay) continued to chip into Olivet’s lead, collecting a riding time point at the end of the match to earn a 4-3 decision and cut the ‘Berg deficit to 13-9.
Olivet then won three consecutive matches to take a 27-9 lead.
Sophomore 184-pounder Jason Russell (Columbus/West), wrestling at 197 pounds, claimed a 3-0 decision over Justin Leonard to make the score 27-12 in favor of Olivet.
The Berg returns to the mat Saturday, Nov. 12 when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. to compete at the Michigan State Open. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
