Tiffin, Ohio – February 12, 2010 – Under the spotlight in Seiberling Gymnasium the Heidelberg University wrestling team sent its 2010 seniors out on a high note. The Berg topped NCAA Division II foe Ashland University 24-13, claiming victories in six weight classes.
The win improved Heidelberg, ranked 25th in the nation, to 9-7 on the year. Next up for the Berg is the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Feb. 20 at Mount Union College. Heidelberg is the four-time defending tournament champion.
Prior to the dual, Heidelberg recognized its senior class. Honored for their dedication to the wrestling program over the last four years were Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry), Dan Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea), Aaron Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea), Tyler Hall (Tipton, Mich. / Clinton) and Ed Bizorik (Berea, Ohio / Berea).
Heidelberg’s Delian Schneider (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) and Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) opened up the dual with decisions at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) went on to excite the crowd with a fall in 4:49 at 141 pounds to double Heidelberg’s early lead.
Ashland pulled within two points, 12-10, after a major decision at 149 pounds and two-straight decisions.
After a scoreless first period, Dayne Williams (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) went to work and put Heidelberg back in the win column with a 6-0 decision.
Bizorik came out strong at 184 pounds, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage after one period. He recorded nine back points in the second period as time expired, coupled with riding time, en route to a 17-0 technical fall.
At 197 pounds, Brad Rice (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) continued the winning ways. He had four takedowns to post an 11-2 major decision.
Heading in the final bout, Heidelberg controlled the dual, 24-10. Ashland’s heavyweight sneaked out a late takedown to take home a decision and push the final score 24-13 in favor of the Berg.
