Tiffin, Ohio – November 10, 2009 – The no. 21 Heidelberg University wrestling team began its 2009-10 campaign in impressive fashion, topping visiting Olivet College 36-3 in a dual under the spotlight at Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg. For the match, Heidelberg won nine of 10 weight classes. The win column included two falls and three major decisions.
Sophomore Jake Weisman (Bexley, Ohio / Bexley) wasted little time at 125 pounds for the Berg. He recorded a takedown in the first period and started down for period two. He had a reversal that led to an eventual pin in 3:37 to put the Berg on top 6-0.
At 133 pound, no. 5 ranked Tony Lawler (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) went down 4-3 in the second period but closed out the bout with two reversals and a two-point near fall to post a 12-6 decision and extend to the Berg’s lead to nine.
Vince Tucker had a decision at 141 pounds to cut Olivet’s deficit to nine, but Heidelberg’s Josh Levy (West Liberty, Ohio / West Liberty-Salem) returned the favor and picked up a hard fought 3-1 victory over Nick Leon at 149 pounds to push Heidelberg’s lead to 12-3.
Three-straight major decisions by the Berg helped to establish its dominance in the dual.
Nationally-ranked Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) had an early takedown and two-point near fall at 157 pounds but no one scored until the last minute of period three. Mizer scored a takedown and three-point near fall to pick up the major decision and give Heidelberg a 16-3 advantage.
Returning to the mat with quickness in his step for Heidelberg was 165 pounder Aaron Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea). Jonhenry had six takedowns en route to a major decision, 14-5.
No. 8 ranked Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one period and never looked back en route to 17-3 major decision.
Heidelberg continued to extend its lead at 184 pounds when Ed Bizorik (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) recorded a late reversal to take a 6-5 decision over Josh Crawford.
Following Bizorik, junior Brad Rice (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) scored an early takedown and went on to register Heidelberg’s second fall on the day, pinning Joe McAlister in 3:38.
The dual concluded with Brock Rickert (Mansfield, Ohio / Ontario) taking a 3-1 decision at 215 pounds. Rickert had a takedown in the first period and an escape in the final period for the win.
Heidelberg returns to action at the Ashland Open scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Ashland University.
