Wilmington, Ohio – December 1, 2009 – The no. 21 Heidelberg University wrestling team dominated the mat en route to a 41-6 victory over host Wilmington College in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both institutions. The win marks the 16th-straight league win for the Berg who improves to 4-1 on the year, while the Quakers fall to 0-1. Heidelberg is the defending OAC Regular Season Champion, and has won three out of the last four years.
Wilmington took the 125 pound weight class, but the Berg answered with two falls, two technical falls and a major decision to help seal the win. Heidelberg also received 12 points due to Wilmington forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds. The Quakers rounded out its scoring with a decision at 285 pounds.
Getting the Berg on the board first was sophomore Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield). D’Alessandro was wrestling in his first OAC match and posted a 19-2 technical fall over Chris Heiss at 133 pounds.
Newcomer Ben Kieffer (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made the most of his OAC debut with a hard fought 10-9 decision over Tim Brown at 141 pounds.
Continuing on in the win column at 149 pounds was sophomore Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga). He registered a 13-2 major decision over Mark Sedziol.
The heart of Heidelberg’s line up did not disappoint. No. 7 ranked senior Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) pinned Kevin Campbell in 4:28, while fellow classmate Aaron Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea) followed suit, pinning Thomas Bohrer in 6:48.
No. 9 junior Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) added five points to Heidelberg’s score with a 20-5 technical fall over Brendan Leal in the 174 pound weight class.
Senior Ed Bizorik (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) and junior Brad Rice (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) earned a forfeit victory at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.
