Heidelberg Takes Part in ONU Invite

Ada, Ohio – December 5, 2009 – The no. 21 Heidelberg University wrestling team took part in the competitive ONU Invite today, December 5, hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. The invitational consisted of 10 NCAA Division II and III institutions, as well as three NAIA members. Heidelberg was one of five nationally-ranked programs.

Taking home the team title was NAIA Campbellsville with 118 points followed by DII Limestone with 111. Heidelberg’s first team finished in a tie for eighth with 88.5 points, followed by its second team in 10th with 61 points.

Heidelberg showcased some depth at 165 pounds with junior No. 9 ranked Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) and senior Aaron Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea). Curley finished the day at 3-1 to take home runner-up honors. En route to the championship bout Curley had an 18-3 technical fall in 3:11 over Adam Trimble of Ohio Northern and an 18-8 major decision over Bryce Sopko of Limestone. Jonhenry went 4-1 with four decisions on the day.

No. 7 ranked Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) started the day with a fall in 10:46 over Ohio Northern’s John Jacobs and found his way into the finals after pinning James Casadaban of Cumberland in 4:54. For the invite Mizer had a 3-1 record.

Taking home third-place at 133 pounds was Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield). D’Alessandro had a 13-4 major decision over Daphilo Success of Campbellsville in the third-place match. Overall he boasted a 4-1 record on the day and had two major decisions.

Rounding out the placers for the Berg was Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) with a seventh in the 149 pound weight class. Delpra led the Berg with three falls at the invite and finished with a 4-2 record. His third fall came in 3:41 over Andrew Shoultz of Cumberland in the seventh-place match.
