Cedar Falls, Iowa – January 9, 2011 – The nationally ranked Heidelberg University wrestling team had a tough outing at the 2011 NWCA / Cliff Keen National Duals hosted by the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Berg opened up action at the national duals with a 37-12 setback to no. 6 ranked Ithaca College prior to falling 25-20 to no. 26 Johnson & Wales College. Overall the Berg stands at 4-4-2.
Ithaca opened up the dual with victories in the first five weight classes. Heidelberg’s Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) halted Ithaca’s winning streak at 165 pounds. Curley pinned David Foley in 6:14. Adding to the win column for the Berg was Pat Rigsby (Dublin, Ohio / St. Charles) and Andy Lovins (Clinton Township, Mich. / Lake Shore) at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Risgby posted a 4-1 decision, while Lovins registered a 4-2 decision.
In its second dual of the tournament, Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) got the Berg on the board with a 3-2 decision at 133 pounds. After two more Johnson & Wales victories, the Berg went on to take four of the last six weight classes. Jason Barnett (Westerville, Ohio / DeSales) got things started with a 12-7 decision at 157 pounds. Curley and Lovins each continued their winning ways. Curley had a 20-9 major decision, while Lovins followed suit with an 11-1 major decision of his own. Rounding out the winners for the Berg was Jerry Knapp (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls). Knapp pinned Jon Flegel in 4:44.
Following action at the national duals, Curley leads the Berg with an overall record of 14-1. Following Curley is Knapp at 11-4 and Lovins at 10-4.
