Wrestling to Compete at Spartan Classic

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University wrestling team will look to get back on track Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Spartan Classic hosted by Manchester (Ind.) College in North Manchester, Ind. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m.

The Student Princes (2-6, 0-1 OAC) are coming off a narrow 18-17 loss to Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll University in a dual match on Tuesday. Heidelberg needed at least one pin and a technical fall or two six-point technical falls going into the final two bouts of the evening, but came up short. Despite the loss, five Student Princes scored victories, including decisions by sophomore 141-pounder Chris Osborne (McComb), sophomore 157-pounder Justin Wharton (Oregon/Clay) (wrestling at 165 pounds), sophomore 174-pounder Jeremy Stepp (Cincinnati/Princeton) and junior 197-pounder Andy Lovins (Clinton Township, Mich./Lake Shore) and a pin by senior heavyweight Jerry Knapp (Columbia Station/Olmsted Falls).

In addition to Manchester, Heidelberg will be competing against Alma (Mich.) College, University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), University of Indianapolis, Indiana Tech, Knox (Ill.) College, The College of Mount St. Joseph, North Central (Ill.) College, OAC rival Ohio Northern University, Olivet (Mich.) College and Wheaton (Ill.) College.

Following Saturday’s competition, the Student Princes will wrestle in the Alma Open on Sat., Jan. 21 in Alma, Mich.
