Lovins Leads Student Princes at Wheaton Invitational

TIFFIN, Ohio—Junior 197-pounder Andy Lovins (Clinton Township, Mich./Lake Shore) went 5-3 and finished in sixth place today to lead the Heidelberg University wrestling team to a 15th place finish at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. The Student Princes tallied 41.5 points to tie for 15th place among the 31-team field.

Despite dropping a 9-3 decision to Travis Ebersole of Messiah (Pa.) College, Lovins battled through the consolation bracket and won his next five matches, including two by major decision. A 7-2 loss to Zach Strickland of the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse sent him into the fifth-place match, where he narrowly dropped a 6-4 decision in sudden death to Justin Leonard of Olivet (Mich.) College.

Senior 285-pounder Jerry Knapp (Columbia Station/Olmsted Falls) also turned in an impressive outing, taking home a seventh-place finish and a 5-2 slate. Knapp won his first two matches, including a pin of Cale Harter of Case Western Reserve University in 1:33. A 7-1 loss in the third sent him into the consolation bracket where he went 2-1, including a technical fall in the seventh-place bout.

The Berg also competed today at the Ashland Open in Ashland, Ohio.

The Student Princes returns to Ohio Athletic Conference competition Tuesday, Feb. 7 when it faces Muskingum University in a dual match in New Concord.
