Tiffin, Ohio – March 25, 2010 – Three members of the Heidelberg University women’s soccer team have been voted on the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women Scholar All-East Region team. Junior forward Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville), junior defender Katie Klein (Milford, Ohio / Milford), and senior defender Ann Washington (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) haveearned honorable mention honors.
This marks Gross’s fourth postseason award. She also earned a spot on the 2009 Onslow Classic Soccer Association NCAA Division III Women's All-Ohio, 2009 All Ohio Athletic Conference, and 2009 All Ohio Academic team. Majoring in psychology mental health, Gross has earned a GPA of 3.50. On the field, she led the team with 15 points courtesy of seven goals and an assist, while starting in every game for the Berg. Four of Gross’s seven goals resulted in a game-winning goal which was tied for second best in the OAC.
Washington served as a team captain in her senior campaign.She also earned a spot on the 2009 Academic All-OAC Team. While being the ‘Berg’s anchor on defense, she helped the team accumulate six shutouts on the year which tied for fifth best in the conference. In the classroom Washington is equally impressive carrying a perfect 4.0 grade points average as a business major.
Klein joins fellow teammate Washington on the defensive side of the ball, while picking up her second postseason award. Klein was also recognized on the 2009 OAC Academic Team. She holds a 3.70 gpa as an athletic training major. Offensively, Klein took 15 shots, with five on goal and recorded an assist.
Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Nick Spell, Heidelberg concluded the season at 7-12-1 overall and 4-5 in the OAC, while earning the number sixth spot in the OAC tournament. This marked the first tournament berth since 1999.
