'Berg Wins Fourth Straight

Tiffin, Ohio – September 16, 2009 – The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team shutout Bluffton University with the score of 2-0. The Berg has won four-straight and improves to 4-1 on the season while the Beavers drop to 0-4-1 on the year. The last time Heidelberg won four-straight was in 2004 and coincidently the streak began with Bluffton (Sept. 14).  The next three they triumphed over were Defiance College (Sept. 17), Hiram College (Sept. 18), and Walsh University (Sept. 23). 

Heidelberg did not waste any time putting points on the board when only in the 2nd minute into the game, Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) connected with Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and placed the ball from the far right wing into the back of the net for the eventual game winning goal. 

Adding insurance for the Berg was Dillard Anu (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville) when in the 49th minute, he split two defenders with skilled footwork and kicked a low ball to the far post of the net to make the score 2-0. The goal marked Anu’s first of his collegiate career.  Anu also had three shots with two of them being a shot on goal. 

Also recording a shot was Jon Kijowski (Norwalk, Ohio / Norwalk), Ryan Vowinkle (Southlake, Texas / Southlake Carroll), Sean Deilgat (San Diego, Calif.), and Michael Fields (San Antonio, Texas / Pendleton School IMG Academy). McCarthy also had three shots with one being a shot on goal. 

Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) and Cory Buhrman led the team with seven shots each during the game.  Six of Beck’s shots were a shot on goal.  As a team, Heidelberg outshot Bluffton 24 to five. 

Heidelberg’s goal keeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) had another solid performance and has earned three-straight shutouts while accumulating 15 saves for the season.

The Berg looks for their fifth-straight win as the travel to Hiram, Ohio to face Hiram College, Saturday September 19, at 3:30 p.m.
