Marietta, Ohio – October 2, 2009 – The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team opened up play in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 1-0 victory over host Marietta College today, Oct. 2. Today’s game concluded a four-game road swing for the Berg. Over the last four outings Heidelberg was a winner of three contests, including two-straight, to improve to 4-6-1 on the year. The Pioneers fell to 3-5-1.
Heidelberg’s Carolyn Gross (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) had a shot in transition to the opposite post for the game-winning goal in the 61st minute. Gross’ goal was her third on the year and her second game-winning goal. Emily Riggs (Armada, Mich. / Armada) set up Gross for her second assist in 2009.
Playing a solid second half in goal, and picking up her first collegiate victory, was freshman Molly Schriber (Sidney, Ohio / Sidney). Schriber finished with three saves in the win. Earning the start in goal and registering one save was Lauren Sweeney (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic).
For the game, Heidelberg held a 16-12 advantage in shots, while the Pioneers had six corner kicks compared to just two by the Berg.
Today’s game marked a reunion for fourth-year Heidelberg head coach Nick Spell. Spell is a 2003 graduate of Marietta and was a four-year letter winner and captain for Marietta’s head coach Patrick Houlgin.
Next up for the Berg is Baldwin-Wallace College on Oct. 7 under the lights at Mayer Field. Game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
