The Berg Falls in Season Opener

Memphis, Tenn. – The Heidelberg University women’s soccer team dropped its season opener to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a score of 1-0. The game was in conjunction with the Rhodes College Tournament that consists of four schools; Heidelberg, UW-Stevens Point, University of the Ozarks, and Rhodes College.

The Berg held its own against a well-established soccer program. The Pointers were nationally ranked during the 2009 season.

In the first half, both teams battled back and forth for possession. Solid defense prevented either team from scoring which resulted in 0-0 tie at halftime.

UW-Stevens Point broke the tie with a goal in the 48th minute when Mary Jean Cornellus found Hillary Sauer who managed to sneak the ball past Heidelberg’s goalie to take the 1-0 lead.

Freshman Kelsey Hogan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Mariemont) had a chance in the 73rd minute to put Heidelberg on the board but her shot was denied by the Pointers’ senior goalkeeper Liz Hunter.

Heidelberg sophomores Molly Schriber (Sidney, Ohio / Sidney) and Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) accumulated eight saves.

The Berg looks to rebound as it plays the University of the Ozarks tomorrow at 12 p.m.
